Your BODY. Your body talks to you. Whenever it informs you physically about the need for rest or is it when it gives you an intuition about something, your body talks to you. When it comes ti TIME your body gives you information. It tells you when you are most active and when you are less active. The scholars call this the CIRCADIAN RYTHMN. What dose your body tell you about your sleeping and waking patterns?

Biological body clock

The active period varies from individual to individual. The most active period of a person starts with his period of rising and his period of sleeping. There are individuals who are usually active in the morning, while others are active in the afternoon or in the evening. Some individuals are active during the night while a few are usually active at any time of the day. This activity orientation seems to be determined by an innate body clock. The categorisations of individuals according to their orientations are as follows:

i) The early riser / early sleeper

This type of individual wakes up early in the morning at around 4.30 a.m. – 5.00 a.m. He also sleeps at around 8.00 p.m. – 9.00 pm. His most active period is the morning period. He usually reaches the peak of activity at around 12.00 noon – 2.00 p.m. The best period for such individual to plan and initiate his activities is the first few hours after waking up. His least active period is the last two hours before 8.00 p.m. when he will be feeling weak and tired.

ii) The early riser / late sleeper

This type of individual wakes up at around 4.00 a.m. and sleeps at about 11.00 – 12.00 midnight. His most active period is around the early morning or the afternoon period. He starts winding down from around 10.00 p.m. He seems to be able to work all through the day but with resting periods within. He works well in the early morning and in early evening/night.

iii) The late riser / early sleeper

This type of individual wakes up late. He wakes up around 9.00 a.m. or even 10.00 a.m. If he is expected to resume work at an early hour, he forces himself to wake up but he is not active until after 10.00 a.m. His most active period is late morning and afternoon period. As the day goes to a close, he starts to feel weak and so packs up to sleep early.

iv) The late sleeper / late riser

This type of individual sleeps very late and rises very late too. He works all through the day and is most active during the afternoon and evening. He is always using the night to review what he has been able to do during the day. He can also use the late period to plan what he wants to do for the next day. If such a person is woken up early in the day, he may end up wasting the whole day because he becomes grumpy, restless and angry through the day.

v) Nocturnal individual

This type of individual is always active during the night. He is like an owl. His day starts from the evening. He only touches some of the jobs he wants to do in the daytime. He spends the night to carry out such duties fully. Most writers are fond of working in the night and they fall into this category of nocturnal.

vi) The sleepless individual

The last category is the sleepless, usually termed as workaholics because there is no time of the day when they cannot work; they fit their working pattern to any time of the day. This category of people spend more sleepless hours than other people and there are times when they sleep long hours but when they have urgent jobs to execute, they can reduce their hours of sleep to as short as three hours in a day. They are usually strict with themselves and others who do not have their kind of strength.

The body clock serves as one of the elements of non-verbal communication because if one understands a person so well as to know his active period or mode of working or sleeping, there would be less friction in their relationship. A married woman who is a late sleeper while the husband is an early sleeper will most likely face a lot of trouble in the home. If the wife is an early riser and the husband is a late riser, there might always be problems because the wife will always wake the man up before he is ready to wake up. The knowledge of one’s active period also helps one to arrange his job schedules in a way that he carries them out at the time that fits his energy level and this makes the individual becomes more effective.
