“You’ve gotta dance like there’s nobody watching,
Love like you’ll never be hurt,
Sing like there’s nobody listening,
And live like it’s heaven on earth.” ― William W. Purkey

“It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.” ―Friedrich Nietzsche

“The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it’s indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it’s indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it’s indifference.” Elie Wiesel

You think of it. Think of waking up one early morning without realising that it is expected to be a decisive morning for you. The morning when the unexpected becomes the expected, your life’s trajectory changes forever and all things certain became uncertain. You have lived a larger part of your life without any major outstanding shocks and you think nothing can ever shock you. You have, however, not thought of what a mere visit to a medical can do to your stable and fixed life. Doctor Wilhelma had been your family doctor for years immemorial so to say. She delivered all your babies and taken care of all your own diseases since you were first taken to her at your final year in the secondary school with an acute viral infection. She was a young girl then and now thirty-four years after and three years short of sixty, she still looks thirty-eight. You have always asked her the secret of her eternal youth but her pleasant smiles or chuckles had always been her answer. The same pleasant smiles she welcomes you with this morning.

What duty has the angel to perform here this morning?

None my dear doctor.

So, why have our darling angel left heavenly duties above to pay us a visit?

No reason dear doctor, just to check on you.

Isn’t that sweet. Angels I know don’t have toothache or any other sickness we human beings are cursed with.

No, they don’t but they can still visit human beings, can’t they?

Yes, I suppose.

The angel joke had been one she had with you since you were initially brought to her many years back. Her confusion with your name: Angelika, Angeline, Angelithika, Angelina, and Angela had turned you into an angel in the doctor’s lexicon. Angel it had been since then and she is always joking about you an angel visiting her. Her take being that you are built like an angel with an ethereal beauty and manners.

Thank you for visiting angel and I hope this morning you came with blessings and not complaints?

No complaints my doctor, I was just not feeling my body.

Feeling your body? Do angels have body?

You both laughed and she took you into the surgery.

Nothing is wrong with my angel.

Yes, nothing, the angelic body is fit, prim and proper.

Well, why was I feeling nauseous early in the morning?

Yes, coupled with feverish symptoms and this unnecessary weight gain in my middle?

Weight gain? I couldn’t see any weight gain, angel.

You have maintained your fine body structure since I saw you at sixteen and that after three children.

But doctor, I am putting on more weight around my middle.

I don’t think so; your hourglass body is till there. Not an inch of fat I tell you. You have always been lean and no jowls of fat for you.

I hope so then.

As you dressed up and walked towards the surgery door, your legs wobbled and you ended as a heap on the surgery’s floor. You opened your eyes later. You have lost the sense of time and your doctor is hovering over you. Her eyes, points of relief seeing you open your eyes.

Angel you frightened me.

It was unintentional doctor. It was unintentional.

That was when you were bombarded with tests. All your bodily fluids and discharges were tested. Also your key bodily organs were prodded, felt and had tests conducted on them. So are also some other bodily discharges. The tests took a day. After the various tests, the doctor, torn between retaining you at the hospital or sending you home decided on allowing you to go home, though after another thorough physical check.

Since angels tend to faint in my surgery, I will still send angel back to her home after all these checks. It won’t be a good advertisement for my surgery to hear that angels faint in it would it? But, angel, the moment you feel any inconvenience or any pain, you must bring yourself back here. No matter the time. You have my cell phone number, don’t you?

Yes, I have it.

Good. Call me anytime. I think you are okay and nothing is wrong with you. Maybe you have been overworking yourself. However, you have to see me in three days time.

Okay then. I ‘ll see you then, in the morning, our normal time?

Yes, the normal appointment time.

After leaving the surgery, you were back home and there is nothing to even suggest you are the one who collapsed on the doctor’s surgery floor. You are so fit that you do ask yourself what did the doctor do while checking you that gave you this clean bill of health. How would you have known it was the calm before the storm? How would you have ever thought that your well ordered, planned and not a thing out of place life is set to be knocked off balance in three days time? How could you have even in your wildest imagination think of such news?
